The
opening of the Cardiff University campus took place in the capital of
Kazakhstan. This is the university’s first branch outside the UK and the first
representative of the Russell Group – Britain’s equivalent of the Ivy League –
in Central Asia. This year, 315 students were admitted, including 300 on state
grants. The campus offers four areas of study: computer science, business
management, civil engineering, and geology. Over the past three years, 40
foreign universities have been attracted to Kazakhstan, and Cardiff has become
one of them.
«So for example, we will
hope that we will graduate students with Data Science that will be able
to contribute to the Kazakhstan government ambitions around AI, data science,
technological innovation in Central Asia. Our students should be at the heart
of that, playing a really important role in creating a future for Kazakhstan in
this area. Our students in business management, again as the economy of Kazakhstan
grows, we would hope that our students will go on to take leading roles in
companies, both Kazakh and international, based here in Astana and perhaps even
further afield,» said Wendy Larner, President and Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University.
«The university has
admitted applicants with the highest Unified National Testing (UNT) scores.
This year, 10 Kazakh students achieved the maximum 9 points on the
international IELTS exam, 9 of whom were admitted to Cardiff. This shows that instead of sending our
talented youth abroad, we can
provide the strongest of them with an opportunity to study at
leading foreign universities here in Kazakhstan,» noted Kazakh Minister of Science and Higher Education
Sayasat Nurbek.
