August 29 - International Day against Nuclear Tests

August 29 marks the International Day against Nuclear Tests worldwide, declared by the United Nations General Assembly at the initiative of Kazakhstan. The country firmly adheres to the stance on disarmament and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Kazakhstan’s contributions to global and regional security have improved its authority on the world stage. Today, international organizations highly regard the country’s leadership in the global nuclear non-proliferation efforts.

«Kazakhstan is a strong leader in several different fronts related to nuclear disarmament. You are one of the initiators, strong voices against nuclear test, a very strong advocate and supporter for the CTBT, Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. It was on the occasion of the Semipalatinsk closure. This year, we had a second preparatory meeting of the NPT, Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. That second priority committee meeting was chaired by Kazakhstan,» said Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General.
