Abai’s 180th anniversary celebrated in poet’s homeland

The 180th anniversary of Abai was celebrated in his homeland. Festivities in honor of the great Kazakh poet and philosopher began on August 1 in Zhidebai. On the birthday of the founder of Kazakh written literature, August 10, the celebration opened with a theatrical performance depicting the childhood and formation of the thinker and philosopher. Among the guests were tourists from various countries, who were welcomed in 200 snow-white yurts set up for the occasion.

«I am very happy because it is my first experience for this festival and for visiting Kazakhstan too. It is a very beautiful country, very beautiful people. I read Abai’s poems and translated two poems. Next time I can edit his poems in anthology to celebrate the anniversary,» shared writer Kama Sywor Kamanda, the Republic of the Congo.

As part of the celebration, competitions in national sports such as Kazakh kuresi (Kazakh wrestling), togyzkumalak (nine pellets), and baige (horse racing) took place. Experienced riders competed in three races. The festivities concluded with a grand concert.
