World Library Congress underway in Astana

Digital transformation of libraries and the integration of artificial intelligence into the sector are being discussed by participants of the IFLA World Library and Information Congress 2025 in Astana. The event has brought together 1,700 delegates from 114 countries, including representatives of national libraries, research institutions, and international organizations. The Congress program includes 86 sessions and around 15 side events focused on the development of digital libraries, the use of big data in the sector, and modern library standards. It is worth noting that Kazakhstan received the right to host the forum based on an application prepared jointly by Kazakh Tourism national company and the Association of University Libraries of the country. The event is expected to be a significant step in strengthening Kazakhstan’s position as a business tourism center and to generate additional revenue.

«The 100 people who arrived from the U.S. or the 60 from South Korea did not travel such long distances just to spend five days here, they also came to explore the country, among other things. This illustrates the synergy between tourism and business events: each participant covers their own expenses, stays in the country, uses local services, and also travels around. On average, the expected revenue from this event alone is around $2 million,» noted Kazakh Tourism Acting Chairman Daniyel Serzhanuly.
