Astana Opera presented the long-awaited
premiere of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, one of the most iconic masterpieces of
classical ballet. The production was staged in a contemporary choreographic
version by the company’s artistic director, Altynai Asylmuratova. According to
her, the performance combines precision, dramaturgy, and deep respect for the
traditions of classical ballet heritage. The audience was captivated by the lavish
costumes and picturesque sets, based on original sketches by legendary
scenographer Ezio Frigerio. Italian lighting designer Jacopo Pantani added a cinematic
expressiveness to the stage, turning each act into a visual work of art. The
roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré were performed by the theatre’s principal
dancers, Madina Unerbayeva and Bakhtiyar Adamzhan, whose duet drew thunderous
applause and became the highlight of the premiere.
«Art is meant to evoke emotion. When a person
comes to the theatre, they want to see something beautiful. Above all, it’s
about beauty. The performance is visually stunning - everything is beautifully staged,
with exquisite costumes and the genius music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The plot is
a classic fairy tale of good versus evil, where good ultimately prevails. I
believe these positive emotions are what the audience should take away with
them,» said Altynai Asylmuratova, artistic director of the Astana Opera Ballet
Company.
«I prepared for this premiere in just under
two weeks. Initially, I wasn’t supposed to take part in this ballet at all. I
had international tours scheduled, but I canceled them all to perform on stage
for our theatre’s premiere. In a way, that brings me great joy, because it
marks a new chapter for me - an opportunity to grow and express myself in a new
way. Performing a purely classical and technically demanding ballet requires
immense preparation,» shared Astana Opera’s principal dancer Bakhtiyar Adamzhan.
