The timeless classic was brought to the capital by the State
Academic Dance Theater. The one-act performances of Carmen Suite and Romeo and
Juliet in the stage version of Kazakh ballet legend Bulat Ayukhanov were
showcased by Almaty artists on the stage of the Astana Ballet theater. In the
story of the tragic love between two young hearts from feuding families, the
Montagues and Capulets, the domestic choreographer introduced his innovative
approach. His version of the ballet lasts only 20 minutes, yet it fully retains
the emotional intensity of the original story. The production also featured a
new character, the Queen of the Night, whose presence foreshadows the
inevitable tragedy awaiting the young lovers. All of this unfolded to the
enchanting music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky.
«Like other productions in our repertoire, Romeo and Juliet
is, of course, a masterpiece of great literature - one that artists constantly return
to. Its themes like love, hate, and conflict are among the most well-known and
timeless. It is a beautiful ballet set to the magnificent music of Tchaikovsky,
and I believe that’s precisely why we chose it. We also present it with video
projection, so we wanted to show that the performance has been thoroughly
developed and staged,» said Gulfida Gafurova, Artistic Director of the Kazakh
State Academic Dance Theater.
«In our ballet, there is a character called Night. She serves
as a harbinger of death and tragedy, constantly pursuing Romeo and Juliet. This
character doesn’t exist in the original version, but she was introduced to
convey that, within this short span of time, death is closing in on them - that
their fate is destined to end in sorrow,» said Symbat Maksut, leading soloist
of the ballet troupe of the Kazakh State Academic Dance Theater.
