Kazakhstan modernizes water infrastructure

Modernization of water infrastructure is underway in Kazakhstan, with plans to build 42 new reservoirs as well as reconstruct 37 hydraulic structures and 14,500 kilometers of irrigation canals. Construction of three new reservoirs has already begun, while two more are in the final stages of completion. Over the past two years, around 1,500 kilometers of canals have also been reconstructed, with work on nearly another 1,000 kilometers set to be completed by the end of 2026. The projects will improve water supply for around 200,000 hectares of irrigated land. According to the relevant ministry, they will create new jobs, provide additional momentum for regional development, and help strengthen the sector's workforce.

«The creation of new jobs will help improve living conditions in the regions, particularly in rural areas. The development of water infrastructure will also help attract more skilled professionals to the sector. Around 2,700 students are currently studying water-related disciplines. The number of students undertaking internships at the branches of the Republican State Enterprise Kazvodkhoz also continues to grow,» said Anel Zhakaim, expert at the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
