Memory of frontline soldiers honored in Astana

In Astana, nine Kazakhs who had participated in WWII were posthumously awarded the medal For Valor and Loyalty to Duty. The awards were presented at the country’s Military History Museum to the relatives of the fallen soldiers – their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The event was organized in cooperation with the Memorial Zone search group. According to its head, Maidan Kussainov, archival and field searches are still ongoing. Efforts continue to identify the names and wartime fate not only of Kazakhs but also of fallen soldiers from other countries.

«This is the second time the medal has been awarded to soldier commanders who are considered missing in action or who perished and remained on the battlefield. From now on, we will continue presenting these awards every year, not only in our country but also internationally. Finland has already made a request, and we are awarding medals there. We will also be presenting them in Georgia. This medal is now widely recognized, and people are sending in requests,» said Maidan Kussainov, head of the «Memorial Zone» search group.

«I came here by invitation to attend this event. Three of my father’s brothers went to war between 1941 and 1945, and it was discovered where their remains had been all this time. I came here to honor this occasion. I am grateful to all the staff who worked on this. Thank you! They found our fathers,» shared the descendant of the WWII heroes Rozakhan Ospanova.
