Interest in e-books and digital archives is on the rise in Kazakhstan. The
Kazakh National Electronic Library project plays a key role in preserving and
promoting the nation’s written heritage. The portal features books, rare and
archival documents, manuscripts, periodicals, dissertations, maps, as well as
audio and video resources. Since the beginning of the year, the platform has
recorded over 3.6 million views, while downloads of digital copies have
approached 900,000. The library’s collection continues to grow. During the
first half of the year, 2,500 digital copies were added to the portal, more
than 400 documents were processed, and over 120,000 pages were digitized.
Libraries are also undergoing modernization. In May, the President signed the
Decree «On the Formation
of a Reading Nation.» Today, libraries are evolving into modern public spaces
that bring together library collections, digital technologies, and new
approaches to reader engagement.
«We want libraries to serve as information and
educational centers while also being places where people can spend their
leisure time, because that’s essential. We want children to enjoy going to
libraries instead of, say, nightclubs,» said Kumis
Seitova, Director of the Kazakh National Academic Library.
