An international container hub has begun operations in Aktau. The
19-hectare site is equipped with two rail-mounted cranes with a lifting
capacity of up to 41 tonnes, as well as dedicated areas for standard and
refrigerated containers. It also provides cargo weighing, repair,
certification, and storage services. The hub currently has the capacity to
handle up to 120,000 containers a year, with that figure expected to double
once the next phase of the project is completed. The terminal will handle
consumer goods, equipment, and machinery bound for Europe, Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. The new logistics
complex will become part of an integrated transport and logistics chain linking
China’s Lianyungang Port, the Khorgos – Eastern Gate dry port, the Port of
Aktau, and routes across the Caspian Sea. Its launch will strengthen
Kazakhstan’s transit potential and enhance the Middle Corridor’s capacity. The
project was implemented on the instructions of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
«The
main purpose of the container hub is to handle transit cargo from China to
Europe. It will also facilitate the transportation of Kazakhstan’s export
goods. The hub will make a significant contribution to the development of the
Trans-Caspian International Transport Route,» said Kairat
Kaliolla, Deputy General Director
of the Aktau International
Container Hub.
«This
includes imports to Kazakhstan and exports from Kazakhstan. Imports account for
about 25% of the total container traffic, while exports account for about 15%.
Sixty percent consists of transit cargo from China routed through the container terminal,» said
Arman Zhakupov, Executive Director of the Aktau International
Commercial Sea Port.
