The fate of the Aral Sea remains a key element of the regional environmental agenda of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. This was discussed by scientists at a meeting in Shymkent. Researchers agreed that the condition of the water body clearly demonstrates one of the most large-scale environmental problems of our time and the need to address it at the state level. These issues have already been reflected in the Constitutions of both countries. In Kazakhstan, the environmental agenda is clearly defined, with an emphasis on a systematic approach to environmental protection. In Uzbekistan’s Basic Law, a separate article is dedicated to the restoration of the Aral Sea region.
«Overall, environmental rights enshrined in the Constitutions
of both countries are broadly similar. While the formats may differ, their
underlying principles are essentially the same,» noted Doctor of Law Amanlyk Gulimov, Uzbekistan.
