Kazakhstan honors WWII veterans

Today, 57 WWII veterans live in Kazakhstan. Four of them reside in the Kostanai region. All have already celebrated their 100th birthdays. These days, the veterans are receiving visitors and warm words of gratitude for the courage and selflessness they demonstrated during the war years. Their feat will forever stand as a testament to the strength of spirit and unwavering devotion to the Motherland. Notably, over 73,000 people from the Kostanai region went to the front.

«Thank you for coming to visit a veteran. I am grateful for everything you do,» said war veteran Mikhail Podolyakov.

«We are all grateful to you, the people of our country and our region, for everything you did in those years,» said Kostanai region governor Kumar Aksakalov.

There are six front-line veterans residing in the East Kazakhstan region. Concerts, individual parades, and meetings with young people are organized for them and for home-front workers. After all, they remain a living link to history. One of those whose life has become a true lesson in courage and resilience is Alexandra Saratovtseva. She is now 101 years old. She volunteered for the front at the age of 19 and joined the engineering troops. Under fire, she and her comrades built crossings and fortifications, assisted the wounded, and worked around the clock in field conditions.

«We built bridges – large ones. Whatever needed to be done, I did it all: washing clothes, cooking meals,» Saratovtseva said.

The region is also home to hundreds of home front workers. Ivan Gagarin was a child during the war, but he worked alongside adults. The National Guard troops organized a concert for him.

«During the war, everyone worked. There were even children’s brigades. They worked in the fields, looked after calves, helped with haymaking, and maintained the plantations of our collective farm,» Gagarin said.

Notably, Kazakhstan leads in the level of material support for veterans among neighboring countries. This year, each front-line veteran, regardless of their region of residence, received 5 million tenge.
