Kazakhstan has the potential to become a regional leader in nuclear energy, especially since the country has all the necessary conditions. Significant experience has been accumulated in operating nuclear reactors and research facilities. Furthermore, its technical capabilities allow for increased production of nuclear fuel, as the country holds a leading position in uranium production. Given the constantly growing demand for energy resources in almost all the countries of the region, experts believe that the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan would be the most prudent decision. The prospects for developing nuclear energy in Central Asia were discussed at a special conference in Astana. The meeting participants noted that despite significant progress in the development of green energy, the region continues to depend on fossil fuels, including oil, natural gas, and coal. The introduction of new technologies, such as nuclear energy, will help meet the economic needs of the Central Asian countries and address environmental challenges, experts say.
«Of all the Central Asian countries, only Tajikistan
probably does not need to develop nuclear power. Regarding the other Central
Asian countries, the Kyrgyz Republic has already signed a memorandum with
Russia, and Uzbekistan has already begun work on constructing a nuclear power
plant. The issue of energy supply is significant for Central Asia since there
are huge problems with water resources, hydro potential, and some challenges
with wind power. As experts, we believe that nuclear power is necessary as a
form of base-load generation,» said Baurzhan Ibrayev, Chairman of the Advisory
Board of NNWI Central Asia Kazakhstan.
