Kazakh school students named winners of NASA contest

Two Kazakh school teams have become winners of the prestigious international Space Settlement Contest 2025. The competition was organized by NASA and the National Space Society of the U.S. More than 26,000 school students from 25 countries took part in the contest. The first place was awarded to the domestic project YURT, which represents the development of an autonomous station in orbit around Jupiter, designed to accommodate nearly 30,000 people.

«The uniqueness of our project lies in its use of various energy sources, as well as the inclusion of additional spacecraft that land on Callisto and Ganymede. We dream that, at least 300 years from now, the project we’ve created will be used by future scientists and engineers in designing real space stations,» said 9th grade student Anastassiya Tsoy.

The second-place project, Icarus, is a student-developed design for a station in orbit around Ganymede, Jupiter’s largest moon. Notably, both projects by the young Kazakh participants feature artificial gravity systems and autonomous life support

«Such projects are the result of teamwork. To develop them, students need knowledge in the STEM field, specifically specialized technical, scientific, and engineering knowledge, such as in physics, mathematics, and computer science. Our students have received an opportunity to participate in a conference that will be held in Orlando,» noted Serik Akylbekuly, coordinator for work with gifted children and Olympic Reserve.
