Kazakh President congratulates women’s chess team on winning silver at World Chess Olympiad

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev extended his congratulations to the Kazakh women's chess team on winning silver medals at the 2024 World Chess Olympiad. In his X account, the Head of State wrote: «This is an outstanding achievement of Kazakhstan’s chess school and its remarkable representatives. I wish our athletes new successes!» According to the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary, the team outperformed the strongest opponents from the U.S. and Poland, losing one point to the team from India. Notably, this silver medal is historic, as the national team managed to rise from the fifth place taken in 2022 in Chennai, India. Bibisara Assaubayeva, Meruert Kamalidenova, Xeniya Balabayeva, Amina Kairbekova and Alua Nurman represented the young team, which successfully overcame 11 rounds and beat representatives from 169 countries.

«In my opinion, this reflects the incredible intellectual potential that we have, which is now being revealed. We not only secured second place, which we shared with top leaders throughout almost the entire Olympiad, but we were consistently between first and second place. Our team is one of the youngest in the Olympiad, with an average age of 19. For many chess players, it is the first or second Olympiad in their lives. They will have many more Olympiads in the future and gain much experience. I have no doubts that our team will win gold medals in the next Olympiad. This indicates that we are becoming a country with a bright future, particularly in terms of intellectual potential,» said Timur Turlov, President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation.
