Kazakhstan men’s short track team won the
historic first gold medal in the 5,000-meter relay at the ninth Asian Winter
Games (AWG). So far, Kazakhstan has secured a total of nine medals at the competition
in Harbin, China. After three out of seven days of competition, the country
holds 4th place in the overall standings, behind China, South Korea, and Japan.
In total, the national team has won one gold, five silver, and three bronze
medals. Kazakh athletes won two silver medals in the mixed and women’s short
track relays. In addition, silver medals were secured by speed skater Yevgeny
Koshkin, skier Konstantin Bortsov, and the mixed freestyle team. Bronze medals went
to Ayana Zholdas in freestyle acrobatics, the women’s speed skating team in the
team sprint, and skier Olzhas Klimin.
«In Harbin, competing against the strongest
teams in the world—Japan, Korea, and China—we were able to win a gold medal.
We’re hopeful that our biathletes can bring home at least two more. With the
figure skaters yet to compete and our young, talented team, we expect medals
from them as well. We also shouldn’t overlook ongoing events, such as
cross-country skiing, and we’re optimistic about medals in speed skating too.
There is much to look forward to in other sports as well,» noted Ayan Tolegen,
head of the press service of the Sports Development Directorate of the Kazakh
Ministry of Tourism and Sports.
