International experts discuss sustainable development in Eurasia

Kazakhstan is among the leading countries in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to international experts, while on average about 18% of the targets have been implemented globally, Kazakhstan’s progress exceeds 40%. These figures were presented at the second high-level international conference «Sustainable Development in Eurasia» held in Astana. Participants of the forum—including experts, scholars, representatives of government bodies, international organizations, and the business sector—discussed the formation of a new global agenda beyond 2030. Another key topic of discussion was the role of Eurasian states in addressing energy security, climate challenges, and the preservation of water resources. They noted that the upcoming review of the SDGs will be one of the major global processes in the coming years and will require active participation from all states in the region.

«These goals were formulated at the beginning of the century and remain in effect through 2030. Their subsequent review will be an important national and international undertaking. The official review process is set to begin in 2027, with consultations expected to continue for three years. In that sense, this second high-level forum in Kazakhstan is already anticipating key global developments. It is a highly ambitious and valuable event,» said Igor Yurgens, Director of the MGIMO Center for Sustainable Development.

According to experts, Kazakhstan’s contribution to shaping the future sustainable development agenda will only continue to grow. International consultations on defining new goals are set to begin as early as next year. Countries will need to develop new frameworks for international cooperation, taking into account the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence technologies and the digitalization of industries.

«What matters most is that we are maintaining a dialogue. Today, the world is facing a very complex situation, both in terms of security and economic development. Artificial intelligence is being deployed across a wide range of sectors, including those related to sustainable development. AI can certainly serve as a tool in advancing these goals. Ultimately, however, the decisions rest with us, with those entrusted with governance. That is why platforms like these are so important,» said Lukáš Parízek, Commissioner General for EXPO 2027 Belgrade.
