Bastau International Film Festival kicks off in Kazakhstan

The XII Bastau International Student and Debut Film Festival has kicked off in Almaty. This year, the competition program features short fiction, documentary, and animated debut films from nearly every continent. The selection committee received about 500 submissions from 28 countries, including Türkiye, Iran, Hong Kong, Italy, Serbia, the Netherlands, Mexico, Poland and more. A panel of experienced filmmakers will evaluate the works of the contestants. Additionally, the festival will host the Almaty Film Lab workshop for young directors. The competition will run until December 14.

«Overall, Kazakh cinema holds enormous potential. Our main goal is to showcase the fascinating and diverse themes explored by young filmmakers and convey them to the audience,» noted Sergey Azimov, President of the Bastau International Film Festival.

«We will host a master class by film director Anastasia Veber, winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. She will provide our young filmmakers with valuable insights on how to apply to international film funds, secure financing for their projects, and participate in international residencies and director workshops. These are practical tips that specialists will share, and I hope our aspiring filmmakers will take them on board,» said Diana Ashimova, Artistic director of the Bastau International Film Festival.
