Astana has officially been granted the prestigious international status of a UN Resilience Hub, becoming the first such hub in Central Asia. The decision positions the Kazakh capital as a leading urban centre in the region and confirms the success of its large-scale urban transformation - from the introduction of a unified design code to the development of advanced green infrastructure. Experts also highlighted Astana’s role in advancing solutions for sustainable cities. The Kazakh capital stands ready to support other cities in adapting to climate change and strengthening resilience.
«It is the city that
really reflects both the ambitions but also the urgency of urban transformation
that is happening in Central Asia. We
need to shift from reactive responses to proactive actions on heat and health
resilience. Astana
was
the first Central Asia Resilience Hub that was recognized, and that expands on
a number of years of work of Astana municipality,» said
Natalia Alonso Cano, Chief of the UNDRR
Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia.
