European Union countries are ready to support environmental projects in Central Asia. Water resources, energy, and climate change were discussed at a high-level meeting in Astana held on the sidelines of the Regional Ecological Summit. The parties signed a number of documents. In particular, Kazakhstan and Slovakia signed a memorandum of understanding. It provides for the digitalisation of the water sector, the introduction of water body accounting and monitoring systems, and the automation of hydraulic infrastructure and transboundary canals. Italy also expressed its readiness to support projects aimed at restoring the ecosystem of the Aral Sea. Notably, under the Team Europe Initiative on water, energy, and climate, approximately €5 billion has already been invested in environmental projects across the region.
«The climate crisis that
is in front of us needs us to work together, to join our forces within the
important project that can be supported also by the European Union and the
country like Kazakhstan and the countries of the Central area. Italy recognizes the
importance of the Aral Sea in this area. Deputy Minister of
Foreign Affairs Cirielli dedicated a precise project to regenerate this area,» said
Francesco Corvaro, Italian Special Envoy for
Climate Change.
