IMF regional center launched in Almaty

The Mazhilis, the lower house of the Kazakh Parliament, has ratified a memorandum of understanding between Kazakhstan and the International Monetary Fund to establish a Regional Capacity Development Center aimed at strengthening public administration. The center, based in Almaty, will bring together countries from the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Mongolia. It will facilitate the exchange of expertise in monetary and fiscal policy, financial regulation, and macroeconomic statistics among civil servants from Kazakhstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The document also clarifies the terms for international experts and expands the center’s functions. The document was signed in Washington, D.C., in 2024.

«Since Kazakhstan was chosen as the center for nine countries, additional functions have been introduced, along with new personnel working directly in the country. This required clarifying the roles, objectives, responsibilities, and terms of stay for these personnel. Today’s memorandum is aimed precisely at this, while the legislative framework has been in place since 2004,» said Kazakh National Bank Governor Timur Suleimenov.
