Over 70 Kazakh films, including
56 comedies, were released last year. According to the State Center for the
Support of National Cinema, the comedy genre has become the most popular among
domestic audiences, with a smaller number of people attending dramas, action
and horror movies.
“2023 was a very successful year
for the entire film industry. It is no secret that we are currently
experiencing a real cinema boom. Film production is increasing every year, and
the number of movies released in cinemas is also growing significantly,” said
Zhangeldy Omiraliyev, press officer for the State Center for the Support of
National Cinema.
This year, there are plans to
produce 19 films in Kazakhstan. Additionally, the country is set to release 30
movies made with assistance from the State Center for the Support of National
Cinema. According to industry representatives, all these films vividly
illustrate the development of the film industry.
“Among these are significant
historical dramas such as ‘Zhambyl. New era’, ‘The Last verdict’ about Akhmet
Baitursynuly, and a war drama titled ‘Qara qyz’. Also, a big musical featuring
the songs of the A-Studio pop band called ‘Soldier of Love’, a film called
‘Shulama’ about Kazakh rap, a great action movie ‘Zhaza’ focusing on
corruption, and other movies will be released,” Omiraliyev added.
In 2023, eight Kazakh films
created with state support received awards at international film festivals.
Thus, the drama ‘Paralympian’ won in the Best Actor category at the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization Film Festival in Mumbai, India. The film ‘Bauyryna Salu’ was
honored with an award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards festival in Australia.
Also, the movie ‘Brothers’ won the Best Director at the 15th Tashkent
International Film Festival. The world premiere of the film ‘Aikai’ took place
at a film festival in South Korea.
