UN GCF to allocate $280 million to Kazakhstan for environmental projects

The UN Green Climate Fund (GCF) will allocate $280 million to support environmental initiatives in Kazakhstan. The funding will be directed toward the development of renewable energy sources, the promotion of low-carbon technologies in the industrial sector, and the expansion of the electric vehicle market.

«A number of renewable energy projects are underway, including wind and solar power plants. Several of them are already operational —around 9 out of 11 subprojects planned by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). There are also low-carbon development projects in the industrial sector, with this area being supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). In parallel, the EBRD is working on greening efforts and green finance, providing funding to small and microcredit institutions, as well as medium-sized businesses,» said Syrym Nurgaliyev, project manager of the Project Management Department at the International Green Technologies Center.

It is worth noting that a country program was prepared last year for the UN’s climate fund to promote green projects. It includes seven initiatives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing rural water supply systems, and modernizing farms.

«Projects will be financed across these seven priority areas. The country program also includes seven projects with a total value of $1 billion, of which $630 million is expected to be provided by the GCF,» Nurgaliyev added.
