Kazakhstan is marking the 35th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty this year. The historic document, adopted on October 25, 1990, laid the foundations of the country’s independence. It established the key principles for Kazakhstan’s development — political, economic, and cultural independence; the principle of territorial integrity; the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms; equal opportunities for all nationalities; political pluralism; and the separation of powers. A themed exhibition at the Presidential Center, dedicated to Republic Day, highlights the nation’s journey from that pivotal moment to its current achievements. Visitors can view the Declaration, which was first published in Kazakhstanskaya Pravda on October 28, 1990. The exhibition features a total of 235 exhibits.
«The Declaration reflected the people’s aspiration for sovereignty. It established the political and legal foundations of independence and enshrined all the attributes of a sovereign state — including its territory, its indivisibility and inviolability, national equality, the autonomy of power within the republic, the right to maintain its own internal forces, the supremacy of the law, a state budget, a financial system, and the affirmation of the country’s international standing,» said Aigerim Sartayeva, lead expert at the Presidential Center of Kazakhstan.
«Here,
I learned how our country became independent and how the Semipalatinsk test
site was closed. The guide also shared other chapters of our history connected
to the country’s sovereignty. I found it all very fascinating,» said Orynsha
Serikbai, a school student.
