Akhal-Teke horse Aqzhan – Astana’s new cultural symbol

Akhal-Teke horse Aqzhan – Astana’s new cultural symbol

A new cultural symbol of Astana has been rapidly gaining popularity across Kazakhstan. The mare Aqzhan, distinguished by her rare isabelline coat, was born in the spring of last year. Among Akhal-Teke horses, this coloring occurs in only about three percent of the breed. Aqzhan, whose name means Pure Soul, was born to the purebred Akhal-Teke horses Gauntly and Tabys. Experts describe her as one of the finest achievements of national breeding stock. Particular admiration is inspired by her unusual coat. Its fine hairs reflect light in a way that creates the impression of a soft inner glow. In the culture of the Great Steppe, horses of this kind have long been regarded as symbols of prosperity, good fortune, and positive change. Today, Aqzhan is seen not only as a rare beauty but also as an embodiment of the centuries-old traditions of the nomadic civilization and of modern Kazakhstan. The presidential stable has since welcomed two more foals, Akniet and Borte, named by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. While inspecting the young horses, the Head of State wished them to grow into true tulpars, capable of outrunning the wind. While Aqzhan symbolizes purity of spirit, harmony, and the modern image of the Great Steppe, Akniet and Borte embody its future, the continuity of generations, and respect for national traditions. That is why the story of these horses has attracted considerable interest not only in Kazakhstan but far beyond its borders. Photographs of Aqzhan and foals have spread widely across social media, while their story is increasingly being featured in international media.
