Second line of Dostyk-Moiynty railway launched in Kazakhstan

During the 7th New Silk Way International Transport and Logistics Business Forum, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev launched the second line of the Dostyk-Moiynty railway via teleconference. This is the largest railway line constructed since Kazakhstan’s independence and is considered a project of strategic importance. The new line, connecting Kazakhstan with China, will increase freight traffic volumes fivefold, reduce delivery times for export goods, and further strengthen the country’s transit potential.

«We are witnessing the official opening of the second line of the Dostyk-Moiynty railway, a truly exceptionally important infrastructure project. It will undoubtedly give a special impetus to the development and efficiency of Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics system. The Dostyk-Alashankou project was launched 35 years ago. Connecting the railways of Kazakhstan and China has become a historic event for our country,» Tokayev said.

Kazakhstan has already become one of the main transit hubs in Eurasia. Five railway corridors pass through Kazakhstan, connecting North and South, West and East. Around $35 billion has been invested in the industry over the past 10 years, and this work will continue. Tokayev emphasized that the railway sector faces major challenges. Digitalization and artificial intelligence technologies will also be actively implemented in the sector.

«Future plans include the construction of 5,000 kilometers of new railway lines and the repair of 11,000 kilometers of existing tracks. Work is currently underway on the Moiynty-Kyzylzhar railway. Sections from Kyzylzhar station to the port of Aktau will also be modernized. This route is a key part of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route. All these efforts will strengthen ties between Europe and Asia and give powerful momentum to the dynamic development of the Trans-Kazakhstan railway route and the Middle Corridor,» Tokayev noted.
