Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his
condolences to Xi Jinping following the devastating earthquake in Shigatse,
located in the Xizang Autonomous Region of China. In a telegram, President Tokayev
conveyed his deep sorrow over the numerous casualties and injuries caused by
the disaster. On behalf of the people of Kazakhstan and himself, he extended
sincere condolences to the Chinese President, the families of the victims, and
the Chinese people, while wishing a swift recovery to all those injured. On
Tuesday, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the western part of the country,
with its epicenter located about 10 kilometres deep. Tremors were also felt in
Nepal, Bhutan, and northern India. Dingri County in Tibet was the hardest-hit
area, with over a thousand buildings collapsing. Search and rescue operations
are ongoing in the affected areas. The military deployed a drone to survey the
epicenter, while China’s Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency
Management have allocated 100 million yuan to support relief efforts. According
to the latest reports, 126 people have lost their lives, and 188 others have
been injured.
