President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev congratulated workers and
veterans of the space industry, as well as residents of the city of Baikonur,
on the 70th anniversary of the Baikonur Cosmodrome. The Head of State
emphasized that Baikonur became the cradle of world cosmonautics. In 1957, the
first artificial Earth satellite was launched from Baikonur, and in 1961, the
first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, embarked on his historic flight from there. The
country’s heroes Toktar Aubakirov, Talgat Mussabayev and Aidyn Aimbetov also flew
into space from Baikonur. Over the years, thousands of satellites and dozens of
manned missions have been launched from the cosmodrome. Kazakhstan has implemented
a number of large-scale space projects that have contributed to the development
of the national economy. The country aims to transform Baikonur into a center
of international cooperation, scientific exchange, tourism, and education, President
Tokayev emphasized.
