Over 12 million Kazakh citizens can participate in the
nationwide referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant. Yesterday,
during his state-of-the-nation address, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev
emphasized that all crucial decisions for the country should reflect every
citizen’s opinion and have public support. Notably, on October 6, voting will
be available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 10,327 polling stations, with 9,709
operating at people’s places of residence and 618 at places of temporary stay
as well as 78 overseas polling stations set up in 63 countries, according to
the Central Election Commission. On the voting day, Kazakh citizens will need
to answer one question: whether they approve of constructing the nuclear power
plant.
«The nationwide referendum is another
manifestation of a broad national dialogue and a vivid example of the
implementation of the «listening state» concept. By taking such steps,
Kazakhstan is forming a new socio-political culture and setting new standards
for making key state decisions,» said Chairman of the Kazakh Central Election Commission
Nurlan Abdirov.
