The number of Kazakh citizens supporting the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country is increasing, with the majority viewing the idea positively. At the request of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies (KazISS), a sociological survey was conducted, showing that over 60 percent of respondents support this initiative. Notably, this represents a seven percent increase compared to a previous survey conducted in August. A total of 8,000 individuals over the age of 18 were surveyed, and nearly 42 percent of respondents expressed a firm intention to participate in the upcoming referendum, while about 20 percent are still undecided. Experts note that the survey results highlight the importance of open dialogue between the government, experts, and the public. Notably, the decision to hold a national referendum on October 6 was announced by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in his state-of-the-nation address. According to the Head of State, when implementing the nuclear power plant construction project, the opinions of citizens must be primarily taken into account.
«A referendum is a
way to involve
and engage the population in
decision-making. Changes to the Constitution, to the political system, such as joining various international organizations and addressing certain strategic issues are typically put to a
referendum, as is common practice worldwide,» said KazISS Deputy Director Alua Zholdybalina.
