A new railway is set to connect Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
The construction of the Darbaza-Maktaaral railway line, spanning 152
kilometers, is currently underway. The total investment in this major
infrastructure project, initiated by the President of Kazakhstan, amounts to
approximately 286 billion tenge. According to the Kazakh national railway
operator, a new border checkpoint between the two countries is planned. The
construction of the new railway lines will enhance Kazakhstan’s export and
transit capabilities. Notably, last year, cargo volume between Kazakhstan and
Uzbekistan reached around 31 million tonnes. The main flow of cargo currently
passes through the Saryagash interstate junction station. The new railway line
is expected to relieve the Saryagash station and, in the future, increase
freight traffic by 14 million tonnes. The project includes 85% Kazakh content.
The new railway is expected to launch in 2027.
