National Museum’s collection replenished with Kazakh batyr’s sword

The National Museum of Kazakhstan has acquired a valuable artifact. Deputies of the Mazhilis, the lower house of Parliament, presented it with a sword that belonged to the Kazakh batyr (warrior) Zhankozha Nurmukhameduly. The 19th-century weapon is a significant historical relic. It was discovered on the territory of Russia. Afterwards, the sword was carefully studied by specialists, who determined that it belonged to the Kazakh batyr. It bears two inscriptions: “Sozak-1845” and “A gift from us to Zhankozha Nurmukhameduly.”

«According to researchers, in 1845, our batyrs led by Kenesary Khan liberated the city of Sozak from Kokand rule. Then Kenesary Khan gifted this sword to Zhankozha batyr. All this is described in history. Zhankozha Nurmakhameduly was born in 1774 and died in 1860. From the age of 17, he was a rider and defended the country. He died in battle at the age of 86,» said Ardak Nazarov, member of Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament.

«He was the leader of several military campaigns against the Khiva and Kokand Khanates. As a native of the Syr Darya region, I am familiar with the history of this region. I know that Zhankozha batyr was a participant in several major battles in this territory. For example, he liberated the city of Zhanakorgan from Kokand rule,» noted Aidarbek Khojanazarov, member of Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament.
