New holiday introduced in Kazakhstan – Tazy and Tobet Day

On September 3, Kazakhstan will celebrate the Day of Kazakh Dog Breeds - Tazy and Tobet. This resolution was issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. The establishment of this holiday is considered an important step in fostering interest in the national cultural heritage, history, and traditions of the Kazakh people, according to the ministry. Holding events in honor of the holiday is expected to attract tourists. The Ministry also noted that it will create more opportunities for breeders and cynological organizations to exchange expertise. Efforts to achieve international recognition of the Tazy and Tobet dog breeds are being carried out under the directive of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. These breeds have been named the national brand of the country. Two Tazy dog breed puppies were presented to French President Emmanuel Macron as a gift.

«September 3 was chosen because on this date in 2024, Kazakhstan’s Union of Cynologists officially defended the Kazakh Tazy dog breed at the General Committee of the International Canine Federation (FCI), securing the country’s right to be the breed’s standard holder. This historic event solidified Kazakhstan’s status as the official standard holder of this unique breed. This day marked a turning point in the protection of Kazakhstan’s national heritage and became a symbol of preserving our history and culture,» said Bauyrzhan Serikkali, President of the Kazakh Union of Cynologists.

Tazy and Tobet are indigenous Kazakh dog breeds and are considered one of the seven treasures of Zheti Kazyna. Their origin dates back to ancient times, with depictions of them appearing on petroglyphs. The oldest of these date back to the 7th-10th millennium BC.
