Zhanibek Abilpeyissov, a village teacher in the West Kazakhstan region, is preserving the history of the Great Steppe by creating a unique map with the pinpointed birthplaces and burial sites of local batyrs (warriors) and akyns (poets). He has also collected Bes Karu, the five traditional weapons of Kazakh warriors – a bow, saber, spear, poleaxe, and club. Makhambet Utemisov school’s history museum stores the exhibits, mostly found and purchased at the teacher’s own expense.

«Our museum’s oldest artifact is a Tang Dynasty emperor’s coin from 621 AD. This coin is an ancient artifact, confirming the passage of Great Silk Road trade caravans through our country’s territory,» said Abilpeyissov, who is also the head of the Zheruiyk museum of local history.

Abilpeyissov strives to instill in the younger generation a love and respect for their homeland’s history by conducting research and exploring regional features firsthand with students.

«Since 2022 we have been conducting annual expeditions, including Zhaparkeldy batyr’s burial site research, where we discovered many interesting things - real artifacts. We are also studying the history of the neighboring region,» shared student Beket Azhigaliyev.
