Kazakhstan to officially establish Day of Kazakh Dog Breeds

A new holiday has been introduced in Kazakhstan — the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet. It will be celebrated annually in the country on September 3. A relevant government resolution has added this date to the existing list of official commemorative days. The initiative aims to preserve and promote indigenous Kazakh dog breeds, which are considered part of the national heritage and are included among the «Zheti Kazyna» (Seven Treasures). The Tazy has traditionally been used for hunting due to its speed and endurance, while the Tobet has long served as a reliable guardian of flocks and homes. Interest in these breeds is steadily increasing both in Kazakhstan and internationally. In 2024, the Kazakh Tazy received preliminary recognition from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), or the International Canine Federation, and Kazakhstan confirmed its status as the holder of the breed standard.

«The Kazakh Tazy has been provisionally recognized as a distinct breed. Full international recognition is expected to take another 1012 years. To receive official recognition, a series of conditions must be met, including breed statistics, a standard, and widespread promotion of the Tazy. Therefore, the establishment of a dedicated holiday for the breed marks a very important milestone,» said Abzal Dossyman, member of the Naiza Public Foundation.
