The Brest Fortress is a symbol of courage and resilience of the peoples who fought during World War II. The memory of its defenders continues to unite countries and generations. This was stated by Mazhilis Speaker Yerlan Koshanov at the international forum Great Heritage, Shared Future in Belarus, which brought together representatives from more than ten countries. Yerlan Koshanov recalled the contribution of Kazakh soldiers to the defense of the Brest Fortress, emphasizing the importance of efforts to restore the names of fallen heroes and preserve shared historical truth. The Kazakh delegation laid flowers at the Brest Fortress – Hero Memorial Complex, and a sculpture of legendary Kazakh pilot Khiuaz Dospanova was presented to the Fortress Defense Museum.
«Of the 7,000
soldiers of the Brest garrison, around 1,000 were from Kazakhstan. Nearly all
of them perished there. Today, as the world faces new challenges and threats,
it is our shared duty to preserve historical memory and pass it on to younger
generations. Speaking at last year’s military parade in Astana, Kazakh
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the importance of preserving the
truth about the war, noting that without knowing the truth, it is impossible to
understand the value of peace,» noted Yerlan
Koshanov, Chairman of the Mazhilis, the Lower House of the Kazakh Parliament.
