Kazakhstan once again supported the international Earth Hour campaign. This year it took place on March 28. From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., hundreds of buildings and facilities across the country switched off their architectural lighting. In Astana, more than 50 organizations took part in the campaign. As a sign of solidarity with the global initiative, the Akorda residence also switched off its exterior lighting. Major sports, educational, and industrial facilities were plunged into darkness, along with the Palace of Independence and the Baiterek Monument. Near this iconic architectural complex, activists, guests, and city residents gathered, including representatives of the Earth Ambassadors movement. Participants emphasized that this is a great opportunity to enjoy face-to-face interaction without using modern gadgets. Notably, Kazakhstan has joined the annual international environmental campaign Earth Hour, held under the auspices of the World Wide Fund for Nature, for the 17th time.
«I am a citizen of Kazakhstan, and I care deeply about the environment and the future of our country. That is why I urge everyone to take part in this campaign. It is all very important because it is our future - what we will leave behind. That is why it is so important to protect it,» said Zhaniya Nadyr, activist with the Earth Ambassadors youth environmental movement.
«The new Constitution places an emphasis on ecology and
environmental protection. As the Earth Ambassadors movement, we will fully
support our country’s course in this direction. We have also joined the Taza
Kazakhstan program, and this year, as part of Earth Hour, we will be planting
trees. The city administration has allocated around 10 school sites where we
will plant trees under the Earth Hour initiative,» said Alan Bessen, Chairman of the Earth Foundation
«Sustainable Development» Youth Public Association.
