Kazakhstan, Guinea-Bissau set to expand partnership

Today, President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embaló was welcomed at the Akorda Presidential Palace during his official visit to Kazakhstan. In narrow-format talks, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted Guinea-Bissau as an important partner for Kazakhstan on the African continent and expressed commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. Both nations share similar perspectives on current international issues, and Kazakhstan is ready to foster cooperation in key international organizations, primarily the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. In response, Embaló expressed his gratitude to Tokayev for the warm welcome, noting numerous areas of mutual interest between the countries. Following their one-on-one meeting, the leaders held expanded-format talks with official delegations. Tokayev described Embaló’s visit as historic, emphasizing its significance in strengthening bilateral relations. The commitment to enhancing cooperation is evident. The countries aim to open a new stage in cooperation, especially considering that last year marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties. During a briefing for media representatives, the leaders focused on key points from their discussions.

«Our countries are eager to maximize the potential of the transport and logistics sectors. We agreed to examine ways to connect the port of Bissau and the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor in West Africa. This is especially important now, given the global geopolitical situation and growing food security concerns,» Tokayev said.

The Presidents recognized significant opportunities in the agricultural sector, with Kazakhstan offering to export grain. Tokayev suggested fostering collaboration in digital services and invited representatives from the African nation to attend the Astana International Forum next year. Additionally, the youth of Guinea-Bissau have been invited to study at Kazakh universities. The leaders also intend to boost cooperation in the mining industry.

«Kazakhstan and Guinea-Bissau have the necessary mechanisms to enhance cooperation in areas such as natural resource exploration, education, and hydrocarbon exports. We are also interested in further deepening contacts within various international platforms and promoting our multifaceted relations,» Embaló noted.

Following the talks, the Presidents adopted a Joint Statement, and official delegations signed several documents, including a memorandum of cooperation in information and communication technologies.
