Developing the extraction of critical and rare metals and
using them to produce innovative products - this was the directive given by
Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov at a government meeting. According to him, the
projects should aim to create high value-added products. This will help build
expertise and create the potential for the growth of technologically advanced
industries. The Head of the Cabinet of Ministers emphasized that Kazakhstan’s
mining industry has strong export potential. Copper, zinc, iron, and aluminum are
in demand worldwide. Therefore, to diversify the domestic economy, emphasis is
being placed on the development of the manufacturing sector. Vice Minister of
Industry and Construction Olzhas Saparbekov outlined the priority areas for the
development of the rare metals industry.
«In accordance with the directive of the Head of State, a
Comprehensive Plan for the Development of the Rare and Rare Earth Metals
Industry for 2024–2028 has been adopted and is currently being implemented. In
the production sector, eight enterprises across the country manufacture unique
products. Taking into account production capacity and global demand, four key
areas have been identified, including battery materials, heat-resistant alloys,
semiconductor materials, and permanent magnets,» noted Kazakh Vice Minister of
Industry and Construction Olzhas Saparbekov.
Notably, the country possesses reserves of rare earth
metals. Last year alone, exploration work was completed at 11 sites. One of
them revealed a large deposit containing about 17 rare elements. If the projected
data is confirmed, the country could rank among the world’s top ten in terms of
rare earth element reserves.
