Kazakhstan has embarked on its most ambitious
project yet – the development of its first telescope to be placed in lunar
orbit. Scientists say it will take three years to complete and are currently
working on the design, technical specifications, and materials for the
telescope’s body. The project, which is now in its early stages, is being led
by the Astrophysical Institute and the company Ghalam. Planned for launch in
2030 in partnership with China, the domestically developed telescope will be
capable of tracking orbits and potential collision threats.
«We will cooperate with the Chinese side to
launch our telescope as a possible secondary payload on their carrier rocket,
which is a common practice in international missions. This is because the
telescope needs to be placed not just into Earth orbit, but specifically into
lunar orbit,» said Rashit Valiullin, Deputy Director of the Astrophysical
Institute.
