Kazakhstan has identified the top five
groundwater deposits, which serve as the primary sources supplying the
country’s population and industries with water, according to the Ministry of
Water Resources and Irrigation. These include the Kokzhide groundwater deposit,
along with the Almaty, Talgar, Merken, and Kenkiyak deposits. They contribute
to the sustainable development of regions and play a significant role in
improving the quality of life for citizens. The ministry notes that these
underground sources supply water to several areas, including the city of Almaty,
as well as the Almaty and Aktobe regions.
«As of today, Kazakhstan’s groundwater
reserves amount to 15.7 cubic kilometers annually. Groundwater also plays a
vital role in maintaining ecological balance by replenishing rivers and lakes.
Currently, 95.8 percent of all water abstraction is sourced from surface
waters, with only 4.2 percent derived from groundwater. For drinking water,
60.5 percent comes from surface sources, while 39.5 percent relies on
groundwater. The rational use and preservation of groundwater are critical
steps in preventing water scarcity,» noted Karlygash Nurikhanova, head of the department
at the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
