Kazakhstan sent another group of its national peacekeeping
contingent to the Golan Heights, replacing the previous rotation. The second
unit will also serve as part of the United Nations (UN) mission. A ceremonial
send-off was held in Almaty for the 139 Kazakh servicemembers.
«I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time and have
been preparing for it for about five years. I’m feeling both nervous and
excited. I can’t wait to get to the Golan Heights, begin my duties, and put my
training into practice. I hope to return to my country with honor,» said
medical worker Anargul Kusher.
Kazakh peacekeepers in the Golan Heights will carry out
tasks to ensure the ceasefire, guard checkpoints, patrol, neutralize explosive
devices, and, when necessary, escort and evacuate UN personnel.
«The unit being deployed is part of the mission commander’s
reserve. Its tasks include addressing emerging priorities. In addition, it has
ongoing responsibilities such as convoying, patrolling, and escorting cargo.
The unit also includes an engineering and demining team, as well as a medical
group. All tasks outlined in the mandate will be carried out accordingly,» said
Ualikhan Baikenov, Head of the Peace Operations Center, Kazakh Ministry of
Defense.
Notably, the first contingent of Kazakh peacekeepers was
highly commended by the mission leadership and the UN Secretariat for
successfully completing all assigned tasks.
