President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with executives of Chinese high-tech companies in Shanghai, highlighting the unprecedented level of bilateral relations between Kazakhstan and China. Bilateral trade reached a record $49 billion last year, while Chinese investment in Kazakhstan’s economy exceeded $30 billion. During the meeting, the Head of State outlined key areas for further technological cooperation.
«I would also like to highlight our Data Center Valley project in Ekibastuz city. One of Kazakhstan’s flagship initiatives and a cornerstone of the future digital infrastructure of both our country and the wider Central Asian region. The project is designed to create a world-class platform for data centers, cloud services, and AI infrastructure. Investors will benefit from fully prepared cities, sites, modern infrastructure,» Tokayev said.
Kazakhstan aims to become a major transport and logistics hub linking China, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Europe. To achieve this, the country plans to create a unified digital transport network across Eurasia, enabling cargo to move swiftly across borders. A key part of this effort is the Smart Cargo platform, which is being rolled out to integrate customs and logistics services into a single digital ecosystem. President Tokayev invited Chinese investors to take part in the initiative. The development of Alatau City is another area for cooperation. The city is being built on the Digital by Default principle.
«The city is also envisioned as one of the region’s leading centers for digital finance. We are establishing a modern regulatory framework for digital assets, tokenization, blockchain technologies, and the crypto industry, supported by a competitive legal and tax environment. Project participants will benefit from the ecosystem of the Astana International Financial Centre,» Tokayev added.
The Head of State also outlined
prospects for cooperation in critical minerals, AgriTech, artificial
intelligence, and food security. He emphasized that Kazakhstan and China could
jointly shape a new technological era in Eurasia. Overall, more than 70 commercial
agreements worth over $15 billion were signed during President Tokayev’s
working visit to Shanghai.
