Kazakh students return victorious from Olympiad in Colombia

The Kazakhstan national physics team has returned home from Colombia. The students made history at the International Physics Olympiad, winning all five gold medals on offer. Five students from Astana and Almaty brought victory to Kazakhstan, outperforming over 380 participants from 85 countries.

«I am thrilled to be the first Kazakh girl to win a gold medal at the International Physics Olympiad. I hope that in the future, more schoolgirls from Kazakhstan will regularly reach the top step of the podium at prestigious competitions like thissaid Nurgul Yegenbergenova, 56th International Physics Olympiad winner.

Experienced coaches and former Olympiad winners prepared the national team for the prestigious international competition. The students spent several hours each day solving challenging physics problems and honing their skills.

«At the Olympiad itself, the problems are designed around the latest cutting-edge topics. For example, they may be based on Nobel Prize-winning research. The participants have to figure out, on the spot, how to apply the knowledge they already havesaid Alisher Yerkebayev, head of Kazakhstan’s national team.

The team’s historic achievement was also recognized by the Ministry of Education.

«This is a major result of the reforms initiated by the President. Since 2020, students who excel at international Olympiads have received one-time cash prizes ranging from 2 million to 6 million tenge. They are also eligible for direct university admissionsaid Zhuldyz Suleimenova, Kazakh Minister of Education.
