Kazakhstan and Tajikistan are set to multiply the trade turnover that last year amounted to US$910 million. Kazakhstan is already supplying wheat, natural gas, petrochemicals, oils and pasta to Tajikistan. The long exports list will soon be supplemented by transformers made in Kazakhstan. Representatives of the countries signed an agreement on their supply at a joint business forum that was held in Dushanbe.
“The signed contract is worth US$1 million. In quantitative terms, these are four power transformers with a voltage of 110 kilovolts. These transformers will be supplied to urban facilities, replacing existing substations, namely increasing the capacity of existing substations,” noted Yerkebulan Ilyassov, Member of Directors’ Board of a Kazakh company.
As experts calculated, the total amount of products exported by Kazakhstan in 2020 exceeded US$757.5 million.
“Kazakhstan traditionally supplies products of the grain sector to Tajikistan’s market. These are grain, flour, confectionery. All our enterprises that produce confectionery are presented here, these companies have their representative offices. You can even find products made in Kazakhstan in any supermarket in Dushanbe. In addition, we are selling to Tajikistan meat products, eggs, poultry meat, beef and lamb,” said Nuraly Bukeikhanov, Deputy Director General of the Center for Trade Policy Development.
Nearly 20 Kazakh companies working in various fields presented their products at the business forum. Railway fleet of Tajikistan today has two Kazakhstan-made locomotives. Following the negotiations, they signed a new contract on supply of four more trains. The total cost of the project is US$10 million.
“I think that the value for money played a certain role. Well, of course, it is necessary to take into account that our enterprises have a long-term historical relationship. Probably, products made in Kazakhstan, after all, have a reputation,” added Jumakhonzoda Jamshed Jurakhon, Chairperson of Tajik Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
A “Safe city” system is working in Dushanbe. Cameras installed on the roads significantly reduce the number of traffic violations. Tajik representatives are thinking about recording what’s happening in public places. Therefore, the Kazakh project “Sergek” generated great interest among them. The parties plan to establish cooperation in this sector as well. To date, nearly 400 companies with the participation of Tajik businesspeople are registered, four joint enterprises are created in Kazakhstan.
