Experts in Astana discuss nuclear energy development

There is a great future and prospects for nuclear power. Today, experts in Astana discussed this at a special forum. New and environmentally friendly capacities are poised to propel the opening of high-tech industrial production facilities. Specifically, in Kazakhstan, this development is expected to accelerate the growth of the domestic engineering, machinery, and IT industries, as highlighted by experts. Beyond the economic advantages, Timur Zhantikin, the Director General of Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants company, highlights that the construction of nuclear power plants in the country will provide energy security. If the project comes to fruition, the plant is anticipated to operate for at least 60 years, ensuring a sustained period of reliable energy supply for the nation. On the topic of nuclear power plant safety, experts reiterated that reactors of the latest generation will adhere to the highest standards. However, whether such a plant will be built in the country remains uncertain. The final decision will depend on the results of a popular vote in the nationwide referendum.

“When a reliable power supply is in place, significant industrial projects come into realization. Such projects hold importance for us as they represent a transition from the raw material focus of our economy. The plant will feature Generation III and III+ reactors, ensuring increased safety. The pressurized water reactor under consideration has proven its operational reliability, with no recorded accidents,” Zhantikin said.
