Films about unknown Kazakh heroes planned for production

New films about the feats of Kazakh heroes during World War II are planned to be made in Almaty. The Kazakhfilm studio has developed several projects, and once they secure the necessary support, audiences will be able to enjoy a full-length feature film about the legendary figures Rakhymzhan Koshkarbayev, Khiuaz Dospanova, and other Kazakh heroes. The creative team aims to unveil new chapters in history by highlighting significant but lesser-known facts from that era. These films will help preserve the memory of those who fought for victory and whose heroic deeds remain unrecognized.

«We are also preparing a project about unknown heroes – four female tank crew members who were mentioned in the newspaper «Sovetskaya Karaganda» in 1944. Apart from their names, nothing else is known about them. They were part of a single tank crew,» said Bekbolat Shekerov, editor-in-chief at Kazakhfilm studio.

During World War II, Almaty emerged as a centre for film production. With the evacuation of Mosfilm and Lenfilm studios to the city, the Central United Film Studio (TsOKS) was established in September 1941. Throughout the war, from its beginning to its end, TsOKS actively worked on various projects, producing many famous films that showcase the courage of soldiers defending their homeland.
