Kazakh school students offer water conservation solutions

Kazakh school students are actively developing innovative projects aimed at conserving and extracting water resources. For example, a student from a gymnasium in Almaty, Dana Kadyrbek, has created a device that produces drinking water from air. The collection of water is carried out directly from the atmosphere using modern nanomaterials. The so-called metal-organic frameworks capture water molecules, condense them, and convert them into potable water without being connected to the power grid. The device requires only solar energy to operate. The student plans to scale up the project and conduct further testing.

«I am developing the synthesis of nanomaterials, which is a key component of this device. This device is beneficial because it is completely energy-independent. It operates on solar energy, and with its help, people can obtain clean drinking water,» shared Dana Kadyrbek, a gymnasium student from Almaty.

The development was presented at the UN headquarters in Vienna at the Cleantech Days 2026 forum. Dana Kadyrbek is a prizewinner of various international competitions in space technologies, as well as contests held in the U.S., Indonesia, and South Korea. Last year, the school student signed a memorandum with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation on the pilot implementation of her invention. The Ministry also supported a project by a school student from Astana, Zhangir Abuov. He developed an interactive platform for calculating the ‘water footprint,’ which allows for the analysis of personal consumption - from household use to indirect consumption through food products. Based on this data, personalized recommendations for resource conservation are generated. The Ministry notes that such initiatives help foster a culture of responsible water use from an early age. Work in this area is already underway as part of educational and environmental programs across the country.

«First and foremost, our goal is to raise public awareness. When people become more aware, they begin to conserve water. That is our second objective. Beyond raising awareness, we aim to encourage people to adopt new daily habits and actively save water,» said Zhangir Abuov, a student from the school-gymnasium in Astana.
