Kazakhstan has significantly enhanced flight safety
oversight, becoming the first country in the region to establish an independent
Aviation Administration. During a meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev,
Salvatore Sciacchitano, President of the Council of the International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO), congratulated Kazakhstan on its achievements in
the sector, highlighting its dynamic development and well-organized structure.
The country is actively expanding its network of international air routes, with
direct flights now operating to over 30 countries. Plans are also underway to
open new routes to New York, Tokyo, and Singapore. Kazakhstan aims to become a
major aviation hub and is taking a series of concrete steps toward this goal.
Last year, new terminals opened in Shymkent, Kyzylorda, and Almaty. Notably,
the capacity of Almaty Airport increased sixfold – from 2.5 million to 14
million passengers annually. Kazakhstan and ICAO emphasize the importance of
the Civil Aviation Master Plan, a long-term strategy for the sector’s
development. At the end of the meeting, President Tokayev awarded Sciacchitano
the Order of Dostyk, First Class, in recognition of his contribution to strengthening
and advancing international cooperation in aviation.
