Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received Chair of the Constitutional Commission Elvira Azimova, Deputy Chair of the Commission and State
Counsellor Erlan Karin, and Commission member, Assistant to the President on
Legal Issues Yerzhan Zhiyenbayev. The Head of State was briefed on the outcomes
of the meetings, which have been broadcast in the media. It was noted that a
broad public discussion of the constitutional reform lasted six months. In
total, more than 2,000 proposals were received from citizens, scholars,
experts, lawyers, political parties, non-governmental organizations, as well as
professional and business communities. Members of the Commission drafted new
versions of the preamble and a number of articles and sections of the
Constitution. President Tokayev emphasized that the upcoming reform would give
a positive impetus to the country’s development.
